Hannes + Lilja's Traditional Icelandic Wedding: Akureyri, Iceland
Lilja and Hannes married in Akureyri, Northern Iceland on a warm winter Saturday this February. Friends traveled from Reykjavik and all over the world to celebrate these two. A traditional Icelandic wedding isn't too different from what we do here in the States, but there are a few unique aspects that were so fun to see!
Lilja got ready at her childhood home with her parents and her two sisters. They had breakfast snacks and enjoyed getting their hair and makeup done together.
Lilja & Hannes married in a quaint church only a few miles down the road. The seating in the church was packed to the max! And the traditional Icelandic ceremony was such a treat to see! They do a lot of standing, sitting, switching seats & other rituals during the ceremony. They had an incredible musician perform two songs, it almost brought me to tears! (You have to see the photo of L&H sitting next to each other listening to one of the songs! I think it's my favorite!)
Following the ceremony, guests went to Hof for the reception! Parents, siblings and close friends all gave toasts and speeches. They also showed videos from the "bachelor" & "bachelorette" parties, which was hysterical! Dancing goes late into the night and the bride and groom were sent off with sparklers!
Lilja, Hannes and their family/friends were absolutely incredible. Stephen and I were welcomed like family and feel so blessed to have been a part of their special day. L&H - We cannot thank you all enough for your kindness and hospitality! We are beyond grateful to call you all friends! Wishing you abundant joy and adventure in your marriage!
