My Editing Style: Why It Shifted

Hi Friend! If you've been following along for some time now you might have noticed that my photos are looking a little different these days (for the better, I hope!) I wanted to let you know why, especially if you're a 2017 or 2018 couple!

Last May I attended a workshop in Iceland led by Lauren Fair Photography and With Love & Embers. If you look at their work you'll quickly realize they are SO different and speak to distinct audiences. And to make an obvious point, both incredibly talented at what they do!

One of the most insightful take aways I had was realizing that there are literally no rules when it comes to creativity & owning a business. I don't have to follow the same steps of a successful photographer in order to be successful. In fact, I probably won't ever fully develop my creative voice or find productive business practices if I'm trying to copy someone else.. And I'd probably never find true satisfaction in what I'm creating. That's when I decided that I needed to shoot & edit with an commitment to honing my own style...

When I first started my business I stuck with what was popular in the industry. (See above!) "Light & airy" was the way to edit and having couples posed in what I would call "preppy" ways was definitely in. It's really beautiful! And I think that's why I was drawn to it myself. But about a year into shooting weddings/engagements, I realized that this style really didn't reflect who I was and the clients I have.

Let me paint the picture for you - The couples I work with are joyful, adventurous, romantic and silly. They go hiking, climbing and love craft beer. They've got a serious itch to travel but would be content spending a whole Sunday afternoon relaxing on the couch. (OK, obviously they don't all do all of these things.. but you know what I'm saying, right?) The "popular" photography mold of the Eastern Shore just doesn't cut it for these crazy, fearless, inspiring, daring couples! And even more so, it wasn't a true reflection of my creativity.

All that to say, my images are looking a bit darker, bolder and more authentic to the moment. I definitely haven't honed in to my style completely, and I'm positive that I'll never find perfection.  Just wanted to let you know that you can expect to see micro shifts toward something greater and more refined as I grow.

I hope that's OK with you! ;)
